Julie
was brought up on a farm in England, so the play of light in open
spaces has a strong influence on her work.
For the last ten years she has been living by the sea which has
inspired her work by the use of the flat horizon line to emphasise
contrasting light. She uses unusual combinations of oils, acrylic,
gouache, airbrushing, iridescent paints and pastels to create works
of drama and emotion. Scraping the canvases to subtract colour is
carried out at various stages, producing a textured image. Iridescent
paints and rough surfaces enable the viewer to experience changing
impressions of the work when seen from different angles.
Travels to Mexico, Guatemala, India, Europe, Southern Africa and
the Caribbean Islands have been hugely influential on her work,
perhaps due to the change and intensity of light in different parts
of the world.
Currently,
Julie is traveling again, whilst her work is being being exhibited
in Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, Easter Island, South
America and of course, this site.
Julie is currently working on a collection inspired by the Middle
East, and is exhibiting in Dubai.
